Donna Barton’s mom Patti Barton was a jockey. Her brother was also a jockey, as was her sister. Though her mother did not insist that she pursue the same path in her career when she was 21 Barton was advised by an agent who suggested she should consider becoming jockey. Brothers started her professional career as jockey back in 1987. Brothers was among D. Wayne Lukas’ first jockeys to call in the 90s and had a number of stakes winners in the era that made her the second-highest earnings-per-hour in the female category of Thoroughbred jockeys.
Barton was retired from the sport in 1998 and she got married to the trainer Frank Brothers, and then started working in television broadcasting. Brothers began as an interviewer for the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans then as an on-air racing analyst at Churchill Downs where she joined the other analyst Mike Battaglia. The pair were “discovered” by NBC Sports in 2000 while NBC was present at Churchill Downs for observation in anticipation of taking over Derby reporting by ABC at the beginning of 2001. She began her work for NBC this fall, doing their Breeders’ cup coverage as their sole journalist on horseback. She was a student at the University of Louisville from 2002 until 2005. She was busy with reporting assignments on NBC Sports and other networks and began full-time work as a race reporter and analyst in 2005.
In 2011, she released the book, “Inside Track: Inside Guide to Horse Racing”. The book was revised and released in its second edition in 2014.
