Staal was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the second overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2006–07 season, and scored his first NHL goal in his second game. He finished the season with 29 goals and 69 points, and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
